Fangtooth Fish 1
It all begins with an idea. During the pandemic lockdown here in Melbourne Australia we faced months of stay at home restrictions. Then one day I just felt like doing something I hadn’t done since University - Sculpture! Working in wax is such a physical thing, more than painting ever will be, you literally have to get hands on and the wax responds to the warmth of your fingers and yields into shape. then like magic it cools and sets hard like the bronze it will become.
I cannot wait to turn this into a finished bronze piece with the help of the wonderful Artisans at meridian Sculpture in Brunswick. It is going to look amazing and probably be a dangerous addition to someones house one day soon…
Original Wax Piece - Made with Skewers, toothpicks and Microcrystaline Wax [42cm long x 21cm Tall x 18cm Wide]
Update : 01/11/2022
I have had my piece bronzed at Meridian and I am blown away by how faithful they have kept the piece to my original after all the technical set up they had to do to it. Given the long spikes and intricate details they really had to chop it up to get all the Wax sprues onto it in order for the bronze to flow properly since it has so many small choke points where the metal could cool too quickly and it would fail.
I can’t even tell where they rejoined all the elements back together which goes to show how they truly are Masters of their craft. Below is how it looked with the Black patina finish before I polished it back to lift out the highlights.

Update 11/11/2022
And here it is finally finished! I went from block of hard Wax to finished sculpture in about 4 months, so about 2 months to make the piece and then a wait of 2 months for the pour to happen. I polished it like a mad man in 3 days and now I think I’ll be ready to sell now.
…and yes it is sharp!
